CMM: Spotting and supporting colleagues in crisis

Behind every shift and handover is a person, and sometimes that person is quietly struggling, writes Alice Hendy MBE, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Ripple Suicide Prevention Charity.

Care workers spend their days looking after others, which can make it all too easy for their own distress to go unseen, even by the colleagues closest to them. As a result, care workers are unfortunately vulnerable to mental health crisis and suicide risk.

Amongst other issues external to care settings, workers are facing longer hours, increased financial instability and what can be traumatic experiences between residents, patients and their families. With many still carrying the scars of the pandemic, it is more important than ever for everyone in care to know intimately the signs of when somebody may be entering a period of crisis as it can often be hidden or misleading.
