{"id":20608,"date":"2023-12-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-30T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ripplesuicideprevention.com\/uncategorised\/new-year-honours-2024-obes-for-bereaved-hampshire-parents\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T16:35:03","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T15:35:03","slug":"new-year-honours-2024-obes-for-bereaved-hampshire-parents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ripplesuicideprevention.com\/en\/news\/pr\/new-year-honours-2024-obes-for-bereaved-hampshire-parents\/","title":{"rendered":"New Year Honours 2024: OBEs for bereaved Hampshire parents"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"\"><em id=\"\">As published in <\/em><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-hampshire-67840769\" target=\"_blank\"><em id=\"\">BBC News<\/em><\/a><\/p><p id=\"\"><em id=\"\">\u200d<\/em><\/p><p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">A husband and wife have been made OBEs in the New Year Honours list for their work setting up a brain tumour charity.<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"\">Angela and Neil Dickson's daughter Samantha, from Hampshire, was 16 when she died from a brain tumour in 1996.<\/p><p id=\"\">They found there was no dedicated charity for the condition so they established The Samantha Dickson Research Trust which later became The Brain Tumour Charity.<\/p><p id=\"\">Elsewhere in Hampshire, Alice Hendy was honoured for services to online safety.<\/p><p id=\"\">\u200d<\/p><p id=\"\">Samantha, from Hook, was studying at St Nicholas' School in Fleet when medics found she had a high-grade glioma.<\/p><p id=\"\">Described as a \"bright, lively, happy, fun-loving girl\", she died seven days before her 17th birthday.<\/p><p id=\"\">Her parents said they were \"honoured\" to be recognised after \"tirelessly\" working for 26 years to increase research and support patients.<\/p><p id=\"\">\"We still have a mountain to climb but major progress has been made since the dark days of 1996,\" Mr Dickson said, adding: \"Samantha would have been so proud that her legacy has benefited others.\"<\/p><p id=\"\">A fundraising stream was set up for The Brain Tumour Charity - The Samantha Dickson Fund - and has raised more than \u00a3230,000 for research into high-grade gliomas.<\/p><figure id=\"\" class=\"w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center\" data-rt-type=\"image\" data-rt-align=\"center\"><div id=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ripplesuicideprevention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/66dfd546ca227e49a1beb243_6593bf77d984338f069b1f0d__132170389_pro-86xxoshp.jpg.webp\" width=\"auto\" height=\"auto\" loading=\"auto\"><\/div><\/figure><p id=\"\">Elsewhere in Hampshire, Alice Hendy, from Fareham, said she was \"humbled\" after being appointed an MBE for services to online safety.<\/p><p id=\"\">After losing her 21-year-old brother Josh to suicide in 2020, Ms Hendy launched Ripple.<\/p><p id=\"\">The online interceptive tool is designed to ensure more help and support is provided to people who are conducting internet searches relating to self-harm or suicide.<\/p><p id=\"\">\"The creation of Ripple has helped a lot of people - and it's all in the name of my brother,\" she said.<\/p><p id=\"\">Deborah Tann, chief executive of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, was also made an MBE for services to wildlife and the natural environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As published in BBC News \u200d A husband and wife have been made OBEs in the New Year Honours list for their work setting up a brain tumour charity.
