{"id":18336,"date":"2023-12-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-30T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ripplesuicideprevention.com\/awards\/daily-echo-new-year-honours-2024-ripple-charity-founder-made-an-mbe\/"},"modified":"2023-12-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T00:00:00","slug":"daily-echo-new-year-honours-2024-ripple-charity-founder-made-an-mbe","status":"publish","type":"award","link":"https:\/\/ripplesuicideprevention.com\/en\/awards\/daily-echo-new-year-honours-2024-ripple-charity-founder-made-an-mbe\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Echo: New Year Honours 2024: Ripple charity founder made an MBE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"\"><em id=\"\">As published in <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyecho.co.uk\/news\/24016008.new-year-honours-list-r-pple-charity-founder-made-mbe\/\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"\"><em id=\"\">Daily Echo<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u200d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">A loving sister who set up a suicide prevention charity after her brother took his own life has been recognised in the New Year Honours list.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Alice Hendy hoped to \u201cstop the pain\u201d she felt when she lost her younger brother Josh by creating an internet extension that intercepts harmful online searches relating to suicide and self-harm.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"\" class=\"w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth\" style=\"max-width:900px\" data-rt-type=\"image\" data-rt-align=\"fullwidth\" data-rt-max-width=\"900px\">\n<div id=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ripplesuicideprevention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/691f34905fce46776666be40_6593d6f208fa86174a1f4e20_Alice20Hendy.png\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"auto\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"\">Using her work knowledge, the 32-year-old cyber security expert from Stubbington created the tool, which has been called a \u201cgame changer\u201d in the mental health sector.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">She also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyecho.co.uk\/news\/19094704.new-charity-set-tribute-fareham-brother-died\/\" target=\"_blank\">founded the Ripple Suicide Prevention charity<\/a> and in August this year launched the first Ripplefest festival with live music and guest speakers. <\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Alice has now been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to online safety.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">She was told about being made an MBE the same week she marked the third anniversary of Josh&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Speaking to the Echo, she said: \u201cIt was very poignant to be told the news on that week. It had been a difficult week and then the letter arrived, and it was quite sad.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cSetting up my charity was never about recognition. It was about making sure other people get the support they need when they\u2019re most vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cI am incredibly humbled that I am getting recognised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Josh took his life aged 21 in November 2020 after his mental health declined.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"\" class=\"w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth\" style=\"max-width:477px\" data-rt-type=\"image\" data-rt-align=\"fullwidth\" data-rt-max-width=\"477px\">\n<div id=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ripplesuicideprevention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6842c9d52c9448e01182cff7_6593c149542d4bcf7bcf59ad_7fee2544193f81ff8916d3107843c7b34.png\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"auto\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"\">A year later Alice founded the Ripple Suicide Prevention charity to help raise the alarm to those in desperate need of support.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">In a year and a half, the browser extension has become available in 47 countries and 14 languages and the charity employs four staff and three volunteers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">She said she now hopes to be able to reach vulnerable people when they most need help and support them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">She said: \u201cIt\u2019s too late for my family, it\u2019s too late for Josh.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">&#8220;But it isn\u2019t too late for other families and other friends and other people.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cI named the charity \u2018Ripple\u2019 because when someone chooses to end their life there is a huge ripple effect to the family and friends around that person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The i in the charity\u2019s name is replaced with a semicolon, which is symbolic of the continuation of someone&#8217;s life, representing strength in the middle of a storm.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Alice&#8217;s success was celebrated by Ian Russell, who was also made an MBE in the Honours list for services to child safety.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">His daughter Molly, 14, from Harrow, died from an act of self-harm while suffering from the negative effects of online content in 2017.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">He contributed to the establishment of the Online Safety Bill.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Mr Russell, 60, said: \u201cAlice Hendy is one of the most extraordinary people that I\u2019ve met in this space. <\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cHer bravery and her courage after losing her brother Josh is extraordinary and what she\u2019s achieved with the Ripple suicide prevention tool she\u2019s developed is extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">&#8220;I just can\u2019t quite understand why it hasn\u2019t been adopted more quickly and more widely by platforms and by people.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As published in Daily Echo \u200d A loving sister who set up a suicide prevention charity after her brother took his own life has been recognised in the New Year Honours list.
